The biggest laurels going to Dice and Gerald for coming up with such a great endeavor. What they achieved was nothing short of incredible. The book and the autographed copies that they sold at the auction raised over (gulp,) $100,000 for the Room to Read organization. Thanks again to both of them for letting me contribute. I was honored to be a part of it.

Now about the painting. It is of a friend, Clara, that was nice enough to pose on a blistering hot afternoon a few years back in Central Park. I managed to get the block in done before it started to get too hot, and then I tweaked the values later. I pulled this out recently and liked it more than I used to, once I got a second look with fresh eyes.

SKETCHTRAVEL BLOG

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 246px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qNKkuO1GR1Y/TngBJpiYE8I/AAAAAAAAARQ/GNxX6sAIVXA/s320/SKETCHTRAVEL.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5654270597444146114" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 234px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Jtb3TrwBfQM/TngBJbLl6UI/AAAAAAAAARI/1N0-VmpS0lY/s320/nashSKETCHTRAVEL.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5654270593590487362" />
I wanted to repost the drawing I did for the SKETCHTRAVEL project to announce the upcoming AUCTION! (It seems like years ago, because it was!) This book has literally been around the world, and in the hands of some of my favorite artists... Visit the websites, too, because they are works of art, too.

The poster is by the phenomenal artist, Tadahiro Uesugi, and is the perfect image to launch the auction. Proceeds from the auction will literally go toward Room to Read, which is an international non-profit dedicated to increasing child literacy in developing countries. The goal is to build a library and sponsor local children's book publishing in a developing country.

My art block for GHANA is complete!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 318px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sEszcEBiHzI/TXpn_t606cI/AAAAAAAAAQo/Hgzyu5prPGQ/s320/nd_GHANA.BLOG.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582889032434903490" />
I am really happy to be a part of this project. I finally dusted off the Julian box, and made it up to Newport, RI with my wife and munchkin this past weekend to see her father and family, and started on a painting. This one was not that painting, but one that I had left behind last year and never got a snapshot of. I couldn't get over the scale that such a small building could convey, and the Gothic proportions of this little church really intrigued me.
And nobody can resist painting a red door.

Brownstones to Red Dirt auction is UP!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 260px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_g8tOl-blX9o/S5KPIzCbrwI/AAAAAAAAAPQ/Ag60yzE6sc4/s320/nashDunnigan_sc.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5445572280746487554" />
I just finished a piece for an amazing benefit auction that is going live today.
All of the proceeds go to help an incredible group of kids in Sierra Leone.
I hope that everyone who would want to bid on a piece from the auction could see the film, because it is truly inspiring. The film was made by two friends at Blue Sky, and the postcard project and website was the brainchild of my friend Vicki Saulis(an incredible sculptor, also at Blue Sky)

Here is a small intro from the auction website that describes the project better than I could:

"Two colleagues at Blue Sky Studios, David LaMattina and Chad Walker, have created a feature-length documentary about a pen pal program between a group of at-risk sixth graders living in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn and orphans from the war living in Freetown, Sierra Leone. This Postcard Art project is an extension of the their film "Brownstones To Red Dirt" which features children from both schools. The kids in both places have inspired us all to want to do more and so we're putting together an art auction of original postcards based around the same central theme of the film in a fundraising effort to build a school for the orphans in Freetown, Sierra Leone and create a library for the youth at their school in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn."

This little sketch was many months in the making

<img style="display:block; Being with friends and artistic collaborators in one of the world's most beautiful cities for this was beyond words. Jean Jacques and Dianne were incredible hosts and friends, and much fun was had. They are incredibly enthusiastic about the art we do for movies and books, and the welcome we felt in Paris was as genuine as it comes. We also caught up with co-conspirators Gerald, who many of you know as the co-creator of Sketch Travel (and who also braved an outing despite a bad flu) and his wonderful wife, Sophie.

I did this gouache sketch in a little Moleskin watercolor pad from our hotel window, using a tiny (007 style) Windsor Newton watercolor kit with a folding palette.
Dice had turned me on to some great water-reservoir brushes which made it easy to wash the brushes and wet the paper without too much hassle. Thanks, Dice...you were there in spirit, man!

It was right at sunset and the colors changed quickly, so I decided on a small vertical sketch. The charm of the shape of the buildings and chimneys in the neighborhood that we stayed in was incredible. (Hopefully that's conveyed in the study.)
There wasn't much time for other sketches, although I love the medium, and this sketch got the fires burning again.

Wet Paint Festival in Newport Rhode Island

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_g8tOl-blX9o/SooiqWoOTRI/AAAAAAAAAOw/2u8R4mpqPHo/s320/easelSETUP_sml.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371143616616877330" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 234px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_g8tOl-blX9o/Sooip7gaqJI/AAAAAAAAAOo/JMCSL1Fm94c/s320/NEWPORTwetpaint_sml.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371143609336375442" />
I just got back from an amazing weekend with my wife and some of her family in Newport RI, and I participated in a Wet Paint festival that benefited the local museum and it's educational programs. The rules were simple. Complete a painting on site (plein air) anywhere in the Newport area, and finish it by 3 pm on Saturday. I planned to complete two canvases, and although I began both, I only completed one (a morning session) It sold in the auction for a pretty good price, so I was happy...

It was a beautiful area called Prescott farms, and the red house was built in the mid 1700's. It was originally part of a larger house that was built around 1730, and was rumored to have been the place of capture of the British officer, Richard Prescott in 1777 by the American forces.

The windmill was built in 1812, and yes, it still works! It is in the process of being re-shingled, but I could still see the old weathered color of the wood just under the dome of the windmill cap. I decided to paint it as it was before the renovation. I was also lucky enough to peek in and see the engineering that went into it. It really is an extraordinary machine!

I hit the painting between the hours of 10 am and 1 pm, both Friday and Saturday.
The painting was about 80 percent finished at this point, and it was broiling outside.
I also brought a cheap umbrella just before we made the trip, which by complete dumb luck just happened to fit in the nook at the top of my easel. I was able to keep my palette and my painting out of direct light, which kept the mixing of colors and my value range from being out of control in bright sunlight. There was no escaping a sunburn, though.

Subway sketching...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 219px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_g8tOl-blX9o/SoMPnO-vxMI/AAAAAAAAAOg/XTBh20_q-40/s320/hats_02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5369152347466351810" />

This is a quick sketch I did on the platform waiting for the B train. I've been trying these great Japanese HI-TEC-C pens. This weekend I'm off to a "wet paint" festival in Newport, RI. It's a plein-air paint auction. It might rain, so it just might live up to it's namesake in the literal sense, too. We had acres and acres of woods behind our neighborhood, and my friends and I would always ride our bikes down to this great spot for exploring. Believe it or not, we found lots of Native American artifacts in our outings. I even wrote a kid's book idea from one of our afternoons.

The wolf is a Guardian Spirit, and he is watching over a little owl-guy who is helping a sapling to grow. I was always filled with wonder and amazement at how beautiful it was, in every season. We are finally launching OOP 2 with Random House at the MOCCA festival this weekend. (*That stands for the "Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art")
It should be a blast. For those of you who don't know, OOP stands for "Out of Picture," and it's a film term that a group of designers and illustrators up at Blue Sky Studios co-opted for a graphic novel collection of our short illustrated stories.
(that was almost a run on sentence...)

There are many new artist/friends in the book, and it doesn't disappoint. Go to the OOP link in my links section to check out the new book. I'll probably post something more from the book after it debuts.

I just finished a piece for an art auction that will happen later this year. Many nights after work and weekends and it's finally finished. I can't divulge the theme or the event yet, but it's a doozy. I'll post a teaser when I can. Check out my other friends links, and you'll see their work for the auction too.

In the meantime, here is a subway sketch (actually a Path train sketch) I did a few months back.

I'll post again soon....

Subway sketches again?!@*#

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_g8tOl-blX9o/SBacpWhogMI/AAAAAAAAAHk/Pvn_qlOdC8M/s320/OOPvolume1and2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5194511454453661890" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_g8tOl-blX9o/SBacpmhogNI/AAAAAAAAAHs/j7vB0nO0H-M/s320/nashOOP2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5194511458748629202" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_g8tOl-blX9o/SBaZ7mhogLI/AAAAAAAAAHc/ISRBWgJzBCs/s320/Woman.subway1train.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5194508469451391154" />

Yep, I know...not ANOTHER subway sketch.
You see I have this monkey on my back, called work.
Oh, you've heard this one before? Blue Sky has kept me busy, and I've been cooking on some ideas for kids' books, so I haven't posted in forever. Here is a painting (sketch) I did a few years back with Dice when he was living on the west side. It was one of my favorites. The sketch is a subway rider I captured last winter. His puffy coat made him twice as large.

I am getting the itch to get out and paint this year, when it gets a little warmer...
I recently got a small watercolor sketch pad, and I toned the pages with a neutral warm grey. I am assuming this guy REALLY had to finish up his work, because he folded up his Daily News and placed it on the train floor. Then he sat right down and went to work. We were on the express train going to White Plains, so we had 20 minutes before the doors opened again. I was catching up on drawing, he was catching up on some spreadsheets. I don't think he even looked up once, so he was a perfect model.

Now that I carpool with the guys to Blue Sky regularly, I miss those 30 or 40 minutes on the train to clear my head in the morning. Here is one of the early images in the story. It sets up the relationship of the main characters. The style is monochromatic with some warm tones. Hopefully it has a "storybook" quality.

As for my first story in OOP 1...Well, that will be completed in a future OOP installment.

Am I gonna give away any Gargoyle story bits..? Nah, not for now. Maybe later, but I don't want to give away the whole story. (Random House is going to have it published by mid next year, so if you want to read it, it'll be out next summer!)
I may post another final or two sometime soon.

The gangs' work in that upcoming book is unbelievable. I can't wait for it to finally come out next summer. Please check out the other guys blogs to see what's been happening in their stories. Unbelievably tragic news. I went to school with him at VCU. I was in the illustration program, and he was in fashion the same year. We had a few life drawing studios together. I was in awe of his talent back then...he had such a grasp on anatomy and color. And to say he was a modest guy would be an understatement. He was truly the nicest guy.

When I saw his first FLASH issue, I flipped. It was outstanding. I was a huge fan of his work on Spiderman and FF. His Tellos creation was amazing, and the art was great. I personally thought his stylizations influenced a bunch of other artists. To say he was influential would also be an understatement.

I am truly shocked and saddened by his death. My condolences to his family and friends. Please check out his work if you get the chance.

Rest in peace, mike. The first two are really rough thumbs. I tend to be pretty "loose" with this stage. Sometimes I work in pencil, sometimes right in photoshop. It resembles a marker comp more than anything else. I just use a standard brush with an opacity set on 60 or 70 percent for the intial sketch, then lighter for the tones.

B. A refinement of the pencil thumbnail. I've rearranged a few of the dogs placements for a better composition.

C. Another refinement, in pencil, then scanned in, then more photoshop to nail the shapes and silhouettes.

D. Tight pencil for the tonal drawing.

E. Rough tone to establish the mood. This will make the final easier to execute, especially under a tight deadline (Which I'm under)

I might post the final later, after the deadline. We are heading towards our delivery date in August at breakneck speed, so I will probably post some more very soon. I'm excited about the new story, and like the style of the final renders that I'm attempting to do. This page happens towards the end of the story, so I don't want to spoil it... let's just say there is a poor gargoyle that is getting the business end of an annoying bunch of pigeons that have flocked around him.

This approach to my composition and drawing is typical to how I handle design problems and layout assignments at work. I've done a variey of tasks in both TV and feature, but they almost always revolve around staging and environments. I'll usually do many thumbnails, and only settle on one after I'm sure it hits the right beats for that particular moment in a story. The angle (whether its dramatic or static), should support the moment, so seeing the pigeons in an upshot above the gargoyle conveys that he is in a less than desirable situation. I tried two different downshots from different angles, but they didn't feel right. This rough is one or two steps away from being final. What an amazing bunch of artists. We decided to tackle the view of the Brooklyn Bridge from Washington St. (For all you non-locals and the West Coast, this area is called "DUMBO" or down under the Manhattan Bridge.)This is what I came up with by 11:30 that morning. It was a tough morning because the light and atmosphere changed pretty quickly. After packing up, we all had a few slices at Grimaldi's brick oven pizza, which was right around the corner. Those Saturday morning painting sessions were the best, even if I did complain that it was too friggin' early. As everyone is probably aware by now, he is heading off to California, and needless to say, I will miss him greatly. I can't say enough good things about the guy. Just check out his website to see his amazing artwork (see my friends links). He is one of my best friends, and a visionary artist. I'll miss him, and so will the New York Animation community.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_g8tOl-blX9o/Rk3enap75fI/AAAAAAAAAA8/l3NvoC6tM0c/s320/2stopsketch.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065949924613154290" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_g8tOl-blX9o/Rk3enqp75gI/AAAAAAAAABE/ixLQHofa-K4/s320/girlonthe1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065949928908121602" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_g8tOl-blX9o/Rk3en6p75hI/AAAAAAAAABM/dQIRMhispts/s320/quickdoodle.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5065949933203088914" />
I thought I'd throw up some sketchbook pages to keep motivated. No more excuses...the blog has been launched! Oh the EXCITEMENT...(drumroll, trumpets, fanfare)
This is a watercolor I did while traveling in 2006. I visited Madrid and Barcelona in the spring of 2006 between projects at Blue Sky, and had a blast. I caught up with my good friends Mike Knapp and Ellie while I was there, their buddy Julia, and even hung out with the two Barcelona/Blue Sky locals, Ed and Eric while they were home. Too much fun was had.
Stay tuned for the next posting...I've been sketching a lot lately...
